This site is operated and maintained by a group of independent Amateur Radio operators (hams) located in and around Ardmore, Oklahoma.
It was created by a newcomer lamenting the lack of active local participation that he had enjoyed elsewhere, and the lack of a web site, besides a Facebook page that appears to have been turned off (said newcomer does not do social media). Before moving here, to really rural Oklahoma (10 miles from the nearest city with a population over 1000), I listened to chatter on three local club repeaters and had a choice of monthly meetings to attend, along with a numerous workshops and informal get-togethers that often involved socializing, food, and target shooting. There as here, the Covid nonsense set the entire country back probably a decade or more, if it ever returns to the previous normal.
Even for smaller or more widely dispersed groups like those in rural Oklahoma, there's a lot of camaraderie among the local repeater users, and our group is no different, but I find it a shame that participation is limited to those within range of and actively monitoring the repeater; step away for coffee and you miss it. By contrast, this site provides a means to converse regardless of location or time, and preserve the dialog so that people can respond to it at any time. While that's the main priority of this site, it also provides a convenient hub for sharing ideas and knowledge, and hopefully attracting other locals regardless of whether they make use of the repeater.
So whether you're local, passing through, or just here because of a shared interest, you are welcome to sign up and participate on this site, and if you are a licensed amateur operator within range of the W5BLW repeater on Arbuckle Mountain, to join our 8PM Sunday nets and make use of the repeater at other times. The repeater frequency is 146.970 and uses PL tone 131.8
